Community Outreach

LAAW focuses on information and education about domestic violence issues and legal remedies to empower battered women to begin and maintain violence-free lives.

Materials are available in English, Spanish, Bosnian, Mandarin and Vietnamese and can be accessed through the website.

Staff provides training on the Adult Abuse Law and Orders of Protection for law enforcement officers; attorneys and others in the legal system; court personnel; medical professionals and hospital personnel; child welfare workers; law, medical and graduate students; social service providers; other professional and community groups.

In addition, staff conducts community education workshops upon request regarding the dynamics of domestic violence, the impact of domestic violence in the workplace, and legal options and resources available to those experiencing abuse.

Pets Promoting Healthy Families Volunteer Program

LAAW’s Pets Promoting Healthy Families Program provides animal assisted activities (AAA) for children who have experienced violence and/or are living within a domestic violence shelter. This is different than a support dog or commonly called assistance dogs, which is trained specifically to assist one individual with a specific disability or physical need. Pet Partner Teams are trained and screened to visit animal programs in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, schools and other facilities. LAAW will partner with domestic violence shelters to coordinate a monthly AAA for children residing in the shelter. LAAW will recruit and coordinate with registered Pet Partner Teams that will volunteer to provide the AAA within the domestic violence shelters. The Teams are registered with a non-profit organization, like Delta Society. To become registered, the animal and handler must pass a test that screens both the volunteer and animal’s behavior.

Benefits of Animal Assisted Activities

Numerous scientific research studies have proven that interactions with animals can:

Enhance children’s self-esteem
Teach children responsibility and respect towards other living beings
Stimulate the release of endorphins, which help people feel good which is especially important for those feeling isolated or depressed
Significantly improve the treatment process of a child suffering from an ailment
Lower anxiety and stress levels
Increase a sense of community
